    Certainty as Insanity.Constance De Meulder - 2022 - Sartre Studies International 28 (1):23-48.
I examine the Lacanian concept of misrecognition by comparing it with the Sartrean notion of bad faith. I focus on Jacques Lacan’s 1946 article ‘Presentation on Psychical Causality’ in which Lacan criticises organicist psychology for misrecognising the cause of madness to be essentially organic and consequently failing to distinguish between ‘mad’ and ‘true’ ideas. I argue that bad faith, discussed by Jean-Paul Sartre in Being and Nothingness in 1943—and referred to six times in the Écrits by Lacan—has essential similarities with (...)

(Un)Covering the Face of Dhaka: Gender Politics and Public Space in the Post-Colonial City.Kishwar Habib, Hilde Heynen & Bruno De Meulder - 2014 - Environment, Space, Place 6 (2):69-98.
Socio-spatial conditions for women in Dhaka are very specific and highly contradictory. This article traces some of these contradictions by looking at the multilayered presence of women in public space—where public space is defined as both the space of politics and public discourse, and the physical space of streets, parks and squares. By analyzing the presence of women in public space, it is argued that one can observe a continuous tension within these spaces between ‘official’ discourses and often repeated ideas (...)

First prosecution of a Dutch doctor since the Euthanasia Act of 2002: what does the verdict mean?Eva Constance Alida Asscher & Suzanne van de Vathorst - 2020 - Journal of Medical Ethics 46 (2):71-75.
On 11 September 2019, the verdict was read in the first prosecution of a doctor for euthanasia since the Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide Act of 2002 was installed in the Netherlands. The case concerned euthanasia on the basis of an advance euthanasia directive for a patient with severe dementia. In this paper we describe the review process for euthanasia cases in the Netherlands. Then we describe the case in detail, the judgement of the Regional Review Committees (...)

“I would rather be hanged than agree with you!”: Collective Memory and the Definition of the Nation in Parliamentary Debates on Immigration.Constance de Saint-Laurent - 2014 - Outlines. Critical Practice Studies 15 (3):22-53.
This paper explores the meaning attributed to the national group as an entry point into how boundaries between the in-group and the out-group are formed. To do so, it focuses on the representation of the past of the group, taken as a symbolic resource able to produce a raison d’être for national groups, and does so within a dialogical framework. Using the transcripts of the French parliamentary debates on immigration from 2006, it proposes a qualitative analysis of collective narratives of (...)

    Main Currents of Contemporary Philosophy in Italy.Guido de Ruggiero & Constance M. Allen - 1926 - Philosophy 1 (3):320-332.
Of late years, even in Italy, no really new personalities or original orientations of thought have made their appearance in philosophy. The best that has been done in our studies consists in ample work consolidating the mental positions already gained during the prewar period, and in slow but unceasing efforts of philosophic thought to permeate the other strata of our culture. It is not paradoxical to affirm that to-day the best fruits of the renewed philosophic education are to be gathered (...)

    Philosophy in Italy.Guido de Ruggiero & Constance M. Allen - 1930 - Philosophy 5 (18):266-270.
Shaftesbury is one of those philosophers who are usually placed more or less in the margin of the history of thought because an insufficient idea of system and a certain looseness of conception make it difficult to grasp their ideas and to classify them. Yet when you are able to break down or to dismiss the mental figures in which you have been accustomed to consider the historical succession of doctrines and are prepared to revive their words with an open (...)

BenedettoCroce'sbook on history1is the ideal continuation of his earlier book published over a score of years ago on “La Teoria e Storia della storiografia” forming the final part of the “Filosofia dello spirito.” During this long period Croce has had the opportunity to enrich and extend his historiographical experiences with a series of volumes, of which those on the History of Naples, the History of Italy, and the History of Europe in the Nineteenth Century are the most important and have (...)

Imagining Collective Futures: Perspectives From Social, Cultural and Political Psychology.Constance de Saint-Laurent, Sandra Obradović & Kevin R. Carriere (eds.) - 2018 - Springer Verlag.
It is a commonly held assumption among cultural, social, and political psychologists that imagining the future of societies we live in has the potential to change how we think and act in the world. However little research has been devoted to whether this effect exists in collective imaginations, of social groups, communities and nations, for instance. This book explores the part that imagination and creativity play in the construction of collective futures, and the diversity of outlets in which these are (...)

Social Media Responses to the Pandemic: What Makes a Coronavirus Meme Creative.Vlad Petre Glǎveanu & Constance de Saint Laurent - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The current pandemic and the measures taken to address it, on a global scale, are unprecedented. Times of crisis call for creative solutions, and these are not reduced to the work of scientists or politicians. In everyday life, both in online and offline spaces, people use their creativity to make sense of the current situation, to cope with it, and to learn its lessons. Social media is a privileged space for mundane and participative creativity through the production and sharing of (...)

L’article (...)

The Art of Happiness: An Explorative Study of a Contemplative Program for Subjective Well-Being.Clara Rastelli, Lucia Calabrese, Constance Miller, Antonino Raffone & Nicola De Pisapia - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
In recent decades, psychological research on the effects of mindfulness-based interventions has greatly developed and demonstrated a range of beneficial outcomes in a variety of populations and contexts. Yet, the question of how to foster subjective well-being and happiness remains open. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of an integrated mental training program The Art of Happiness on psychological well-being in a general population. The mental training program was designed to help practitioners develop new ways to nurture their own happiness. This (...)

Subjectivity as a play of territorialization: Exploring affective attachments to place through collective biography.Katerina Zabrodska & Constance Ellwood - 2011 - Human Affairs 21 (2):184-195.
In this paper the authors seek to contribute to a new ontology of an embodied, desiring subject through an exploration of their own subjectivities and of the ways in which subjectivities are produced and transformed through affective attachments to place. Using the method of collective biography (Davies, Gannon 2006) and drawing on Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts of desire and territorialization they examine their affective responses and attachments to place: Australia and the Czech Republic. As a point of departure for their (...)

Rethinking Reprogenetics: Enhancing Ethical Analysis of Reprogenetic Technologies by Immaculada de Melo-Martin.Constance K. Perry - 2018 - International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 11 (1):151-156.
Rethinking Reprogenetics by Immaculada de Melo-Martin has at its heart a desire to spark discussion about the foundations of our right to reproduce. While many of the arguments are familiar in feminist ethics, de Melo-Martin's text is a useful addition in that she is focusing on the development and application of genetic technology toward reproductive ends, including the ends of transhumanism. Particularly, de Melo-Martin is skeptical about claims that genetic reproduction is a need or right deserving of social resources. This (...)

    How Does Plato’s Exercise Work?Constance Meinwald - 2014 - Dialogue 53 (3):465-494.

Cognitive remediation for depression vulnerability: Current challenges and new directions.Yannick Vander Zwalmen, Kristof Hoorelbeke, Eveline Liebaert, Constance Nève de Mévergnies & Ernst H. W. Koster - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
It is increasingly acknowledged that cognitive impairment can play an important role in depression vulnerability. Therefore, cognitive remediation strategies, and cognitive control training procedures have gained attention in recent years as possible interventions for depression. Recent studies suggest a small to medium effect on indicators of depression vulnerability. Despite initial evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of CCT, several central questions remain. In this paper we consider the key challenges for the clinical implementation of CCT, including exploration of potential working (...)
